ITIL 4 certifies individuals, not organizations. PeopleCert (since 2021) operates the exam scheme; Accredited Training Organizations deliver training. Multiple streams reflect different practitioner needs: Foundation entry, Managing Professional (technical-facing), Strategic Leader (business-facing), Practice Manager (practice-specialist), Master (capstone).

Foundation level

ITIL 4 Foundation — entry-level qualification. Single exam covering:

  • The Service Value System (SVS) and its components
  • The Service Value Chain (SVC) and its six activities
  • The Four Dimensions of service management
  • The Seven Guiding Principles
  • Selected practice descriptions (subset of the 34)
  • Key terminology

Exam format:

  • 40 multiple-choice questions
  • 60-minute duration
  • 26 correct to pass (65%)
  • Closed-book

Prerequisites: none.

Typical preparation: 16-24 hours of training (instructor-led 2-3 days, or self-study equivalent) + practice exams.

Common adoption pattern: enterprise IT departments require Foundation for staff in service-management roles. Procurement RFPs sometimes specify Foundation-trained workforce.

Managing Professional (MP) stream

Aimed at IT practitioners working in technology and digital teams. Combines four modules:

ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support (CDS)

Focus: design, building, transition, operation. Covers the Design & Transition, Obtain/Build, and Deliver & Support activities deeply. Service Quality and improvement throughout the service lifecycle.

ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV)

Focus: consumer and stakeholder engagement, journey design, demand management, customer experience. Covers the Engage activity deeply.

ITIL 4 Specialist: High-Velocity IT (HVIT)

Focus: digital transformation, high-velocity delivery, Agile / Lean / DevOps integration. Direct reach toward DevOps / SRE practice.

ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI)

Shared with Strategic Leader stream. Focus: direction-setting, planning, improvement. Covers governance, the Plan and Improve activities, organizational change management.

MP Designation

Awarded after passing Foundation + all four modules. PeopleCert issues the MP designation digitally.

Typical timeline: 6-18 months from Foundation to MP completion.

Strategic Leader (SL) stream

Aimed at IT leaders, business managers, digital strategists. Combines two modules:

ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI)

(Shared with MP — covered once across both designations.)

ITIL 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy (DITS)

Focus: strategy formulation, digital strategy, business-IT alignment, navigating disruption.

SL Designation

Awarded after passing Foundation + DPI + DITS. PeopleCert issues the SL designation digitally.

Typical timeline: 6-12 months.

Practice Manager (PM) stream

Introduced as part of the 2023 refresh. Aimed at practice-specialist practitioners. Six modules grouped by practice cluster:

  • ITIL 4 Specialist: Monitor, Support, and Fulfil — Incident Management, Service Desk, Service Request Management, Monitoring and Event Management, Problem Management.
  • ITIL 4 Specialist: Plan, Implement, and Control — Capacity and Performance Management, Change Enablement, IT Asset Management, Release Management, Service Configuration Management, Deployment Management.
  • ITIL 4 Specialist: Collaborate, Assure, and Improve — Continual Improvement, Information Security Management, Relationship Management, Service Level Management, Supplier Management.
  • ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver, and Support (shared with MP).
  • ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value (shared with MP).
  • ITIL 4 Specialist: High-Velocity IT (shared with MP).

PM Designation

Awarded after completing five of the six modules including the three PM-stream-specific ones (Monitor/Support/Fulfil, Plan/Implement/Control, Collaborate/Assure/Improve).

Aimed at filling the practice-depth gap between Foundation (breadth) and Master (capstone).

Master level

ITIL 4 Master — capstone. Requires:

  • Foundation
  • All MP modules (CDS, DSV, HVIT, DPI)
  • All SL modules (DPI shared, DITS)
  • Five or more years of recent practical experience in IT service management at a strategic / leadership level
  • Submission of a case-study-based assessment demonstrating application of ITIL concepts to a real-world scenario
  • Interview / oral defense with PeopleCert assessors

Awarded after successful assessment. Relatively low volume compared to lower tiers; positioned as the demonstration of practitioner mastery.

Specialist modules (outside main streams)

PeopleCert publishes specialist modules for specific practices and topic areas:

  • ITIL 4 Specialist: Acquiring and Managing Cloud Services
  • ITIL 4 Specialist: Business Relationship Management
  • ITIL 4 Specialist: IT Asset Management
  • ITIL 4 Specialist: Sustainability in Digital and IT — connecting service management to environmental sustainability
  • Others added periodically

Standalone certifications; not required for stream designations but count toward continuing professional development credits.

Exam mechanics

  • Booking: via PeopleCert directly or via Accredited Training Organizations. Online proctored exams available globally; in-person available in many cities.
  • Cost: Foundation typically €300-500 for exam-only; €1,000-2,000 with training. Higher-tier modules €400-800 exam-only; €1,500-3,500 with training. Significant variation by training provider and region.
  • Re-take: failed exam may be re-taken; minor wait period between attempts.
  • Renewal: PeopleCert introduced a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) renewal scheme. Certifications renew every three years through CPD credit accumulation or re-examination.
  • Digital credentials: PeopleCert issues digital badges via the PeopleCert Wallet platform; verifiable independently.

CPD requirement (introduced 2023)

PeopleCert introduced a renewal scheme requiring Continuing Professional Development:

  • Per certification: typically 20-40 CPD credits over a three-year cycle
  • Credit sources: ATO-delivered courses, PeopleCert webinars, practitioner contributions (conference presentations, published articles), self-study with assessment
  • Annual subscription: PeopleCert MyAxelos / MyPeopleCert membership covers CPD tracking and provides ongoing access to content

This is a significant change from the earlier "lifetime" certification model. Some practitioners are critical of the change as revenue-driven; PeopleCert positions it as currency-of-skills assurance.

Certification recognition

  • Enterprise IT procurement: ITIL Foundation is commonly cited; higher-tier certifications less so but valued.
  • Managed-service providers: typically require Foundation across operational staff; MP / SL for senior practitioners.
  • Government / public sector: UK government especially values ITIL given the framework's UK government origin. Other governments vary.
  • Specific tooling vendor partnerships: ServiceNow, BMC, ManageEngine partner programs sometimes specify ITIL certification for partner-staff credentials.

Common practitioner views on certification value

  • Foundation: widely seen as worth holding for vocabulary and procurement signal. Considered low-bar.
  • MP modules: mixed views. Useful for those serving enterprise IT contexts; less useful for SaaS-native or SRE-native practitioners.
  • SL modules: targeted at senior leaders; useful for those in or aspiring to IT leadership roles.
  • PM modules: useful for practice specialists building depth in specific areas.
  • Master: prestige certification; meaningful for consulting and strategic-leader contexts.

Critique: certification volume in CVs sometimes substitutes for capability development. The exams (especially Foundation) test recall of framework content rather than ability to apply.

SRE and AI-agent fit notes

  • HVIT module is the SRE-bridge. Worth particular attention for SRE-track practitioners interacting with ITIL-using enterprises.
  • Specialist modules approaching AI: none specifically for AI / agent systems as of 2026. ITIL 4 Specialist: Acquiring and Managing Cloud Services is the closest existing module for AI-as-a-service vendor management.
  • PeopleCert DevOps Institute content: PeopleCert owns the DevOps Institute IP since 2022. Some DevOps Institute certifications complement ITIL credentialing for SRE-track practitioners (DevOps Foundation, DevOps Leader, SRE Foundation, SRE Practitioner).

Stefan-context credentialing decision

  • ITIL 4 Foundation is reasonable to hold if procurement context expects it. Cost-benefit favorable for enterprise / Mittelstand engagement work.
  • HVIT is the most-likely-useful MP module for SRE-track work in enterprise contexts.
  • MP and SL designations have diminishing returns vs hands-on practitioner work for solo / small-team operations.
  • Master unlikely to be cost-justified.

For the broader certification-vs-capability question, the working principle holds: certifications signal vocabulary fluency; capability is built by doing the work.
